Recognizing TMJ symptoms

Diagnosing TMJ can be a tough job because there are many symptoms which may confuse you with the actual problem. Correct TMJ treatment depends on the correct diagnosis. There are the classic symptoms that affect the joint, head, face and teeth.

The popping or snapping of the jaw is one sure symptom. Sometimes the clicking sounds can be so loud that it can be heard by people next to you while you chew your food. The pain may or may not be there, but every time there is click or a pop. However in TMJ, the muscles which move the jaw are tenser than normal.

Jaw Lock

A person with a locked jaw has to move their jaw to one side in order to ‘unlock’ it. Or a person might have to wriggle their jaw around until they hear a ‘click’, and their jaw pops open. He/she can opt for a TMJ treatment because a professional dentist understands and cures the problem effectively.

A change in the bite

An affected jaw has movement trouble which affects your bite. A TMJ disc going out of place may cause the disc and the bones not to fit together properly.

Ear trouble

The human jaw has a close relationship with the ear, an injury to the jaw affects the ear. Symptoms may include ear pain, stuffiness, a feeling of fullness in the ear and in some cases, even hearing loss.

Headaches

Another common symptom of a TMJ problem is headaches. A person may suffer headaches in the temple and the back of the head. A person suffering from TMJ has the habit of grinding and clenching their teeth because of splitting headaches. A displaced disc in the jaw causes pain in the joint which is directed into the temples, neck and forehead.

Hopefully these points may aid in a correct TMJ treatment.
