Caring For Your Dentures

by | Dec 20, 2012 | Dentistry

If you have dentures, it’s important to take good care of them so that they last a long time and don’t develop dangerous bacteria or infect your mouth. Dentures in Summerlin are high quality and constructed to fit your individual mouth which means they’ll require some special care to keep them in good shape.

Avoid dropping them accidentally when brushing them over the sink which might cause your dentures to shatter. You might want to put a folded towel over your bathroom counter or keep the sink full of water to create a safer surface while cleaning your dentures.

Even though dentures in Summerlin are not real teeth, they still must be brushed daily just like real teeth in order to remove any plaque buildup and food bits. Brushing your dentures will also help to prevent the forming of permanent stains on your artificial teeth. Pick a brush with soft bristles that is designed specifically for cleaning dentures. Ask your dentist for recommendations for the appropriate tooth brush. Avoid using a brush that has hard bristles that can wear dentures down or damage the surface. When brushing your dentures, gently brush all the surfaces of each separate tooth being careful not to ruin the materials or bend any of the attachments. Even if you don’t thoroughly brush your dentures after every meal, be sure to at least rinse the dentures after you eat.

Though regular toothpaste works just fine most of the time, you’ll want to get a good denture cleaner as well. A mild dishwashing soap of hand soap can be used for cleaning dentures with care, but avoid using any household cleaners which would be too abrasive and could end up being dangerous to put in your mouth. Bleach should also be avoided as it can end up whitening the pink gums of the dentures. Ultrasonic cleaners are safe to use for cleaning dentures. These cleaners are a small device that is similar to a mini bathtub in which a gentle cleaning solution is held. The dentures are then immersed in the tub and an ultrasonic cleaner will help dislodge small bits of food and buildup as the dentures soak. Look for cleaners that have been approved by the American Dental Association when looking for dentures in Summerlin or cleaning products to keep them well maintained.

Even when you aren’t actually wearing your dentures they still need to be kept moist so they don’t lose shape or dry out. When they aren’t being worn, your dentures should be put into a denture cleanser or water to soak. If, however, your dentures have metal attachments you should be careful having them soak as the metal pieces could become tarnished or rust.
