Invisalign vs. Clear Braces

by | May 26, 2017 | Dental

If you or your child is interested in invisalign in Beverly Hills, naturally you will both have some questions. What is the difference between invisalign and clear braces? Can both take care of my issues? Here are some differences to remember when making your decision.

Invisalign

Invisalign offers a transparent option, similar to retainers, to align your teeth. You will wear them for at least 22 hours a day and they are changed every two weeks. Generally, the treatment can take about nine months up to a year.

Your first appointment will be a consultation with an orthodontist or dentist that offers invisalign. It will then be determined if you are a good candidate for it. If you are and you decide to proceed, then your doctor will receive your first set of invisalign retainers to begin your treatment.

Clear Braces

Ceramic material is used for the brackets and can be made to match the color of your teeth or be transparent. They work the same as metal braces; brackets are attached or bonded to your teeth and a wire is used to align them. They get adjusted every four weeks or so, just like regular braces.

The Major Differences

Clear braces can treat more severe issues like a crossbite and very crooked teeth. They also require fewer adjustments.

Invisalign can be removed, but this does take discipline. You need to remove them to eat, brush, floss, etc. but also need to make sure you put them back in.

While the clear braces do blend, the brackets are more noticeable then invisalign. They can also be brittle and can cause irritation. Clear braces can stain your teeth and cannot always fix the alignment issues with your bottom teeth.

Which is Right for Me?

Ultimately, you and your orthodontist or dentist will decide what will work best for you. Though you may not want to deal with braces, even if they are clear, your situation may be more severe and you may need them. You certainly don’t want to have a need for teeth realignment again in the future, so doing it right the first time is important.
