Wonder why you did so poorly in your last job interview? Wonder why that date never called back? It could be the fault not of your stars but your bad teeth. Although it seems politically incorrect to say that people judge others by how their teeth look, studies are showing that this is indeed the case. A trip to a cosmetic dentist in Vernon Hills or elsewhere is for more than just looking better.
Does Straight Teeth Equal Trustworthiness?
Of course, crooked teeth means nothing about whether a person is trustworthy or not. Unfortunately, most people assume that bad teeth means a bad person. This was the finding of a 2012 study done by Kelton Research, in which 40% of respondents stated they would never date someone with crooked teeth. Nearly three-quarters of respondents (73%) further stated that people with bad teeth were “untrustworthy.” Ouch.
Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry Study
Another study, conducted by the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry and published in 2013, used computer graphics to change pictures of people smiling so they had either good or bad teeth. Volunteers said that people with bad teeth were dumber, uglier, less friendly and less trustworthy than people with good teeth.
American Dental Association’s Millennial Study
In 2017, the American Dental Association (ADA) published a study focusing on millennials and their teeth. In the study, 28% reported that their bad teeth was the reason why they could not get a new job. A main reason why was that crooked or discolored teeth made people more scared to get an interview or even meet new people socially, especially for a date.
